How answering services charge

What an answering service costs: per minute, per call, per month.

Answering services bill in one of three ways. Per minute of talk time, which is how most live services and Pickwick charge, so a long call costs more than a short one and a hang-up costs nothing. Per call, a flat amount whether the call took twenty seconds or ten minutes, which suits a line with short, similar calls. Per month, a flat fee with a cap on calls or minutes and an overage rate above it, which is what the plans on this page are: a monthly price that includes the minutes, then a per-minute rate past them.

Pickwick's plans round each call up to the next minute and do not count calls under ten seconds that hang up before the greeting. A three-minute average call makes the After-hours & overflow plan about 200 calls a month; your own average is on the dashboard after the first week. To see what the calls you miss now are worth, use the missed-call calculator.

What a missed call costs

One booked job a month can cover it.

Put in your own numbers. A caller who reaches voicemail often calls the next shop instead. This is the same calculator, on the same placeholders and against the same plan, as the full calculator page, which explains every assumption.

All rings, both lines if you forward to a cell.

Voicemail or rang out, as a share of all rings.

Your judgment. Try a low number too.

From your invoices, not a table.

$7,578revenue at risk a month
21.7jobs lost a month
50.9xthe After-hours & overflow plan, $149 a month

On these numbers the revenue at risk covers the After-hours & overflow plan. Net of the plan: $7,428 a month. An estimate from the numbers you enter, not a guarantee.

The arithmetic, step by step

Missed calls a week = calls × share missed = 10.
Jobs lost a week = missed calls × share who book elsewhere = 5.
Jobs lost a month = jobs lost a week × 4.33 weeks.
Revenue at risk = jobs lost a month × your average ticket.
The last figure divides that by the After-hours & overflow plan's $149 a month. It assumes every one of those callers would otherwise have gone elsewhere.

Questions

Anything else: write to us.

How does the free trial work?

After-hours & overflow and Pro are free for 14 days from the day your line goes live, with no card needed. Before the trial ends we will ask whether you want to keep going; nothing is billed unless you do.

What counts as a minute?

Time on the line with a caller, rounded up to the next minute per call. Calls under ten seconds that hang up before the greeting are not counted.

What happens if I go over?

Pickwick keeps answering. Extra minutes are billed at your plan's overage rate, and the dashboard shows your usage so there are no surprises. If you go over two months running, we will suggest the plan that costs you less.

Is there a contract?

No long-term contract. Plans are month to month, or annual with two months free. Either side may end the service with thirty days' notice.

Is there a setup fee?

No. After-hours & overflow and Pro set up on this site in about ten minutes. Business includes a guided onboarding with us.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. You keep your number and forward it to your Pickwick line after hours, when busy, or always.

More than three locations, or a franchise?

Talk to us about volume pricing across locations.

My business is not in home services. Can I use it?

Yes, for the industries listed on our industries page: they go live through a guided onboarding on any plan. Not for healthcare practices for now: we cannot yet sign the agreements that patient information requires.

Ten minutes to set up. A business day to go live.

Or see it on your own calls first.
